Leisure as a hobby

It’s been a while. I’ve been slacking on my summer goals in favor of licking the wounds from the rejections in the query trenches. But it’s my birthday and I am listening to Beg, Borrow, or Steal by Sarah Adams and it’s like God is giving me a pep talk through this audiobook where the female main character gets a brutal query rejection email and the love interest gives her a speech I really needed to hear. About not giving up on a dream because of one “no.” It’s reminding me that I loved writing my book and I love the story and the characters and I really want to see it through. So I’m pulling myself out of the wallowing place I’ve been, where nothing gets done, with this blog post. It’ll be quick but it is vital (to me.)

I’ll talk about my favorite hobby this summer: Doing nothing.

I’ve been going to a park I have become obsessed with.

I bring my picnic blanket, books, sometimes I grab food and just enjoy my own company. I may read, draw, stare at the sky, bird watch, walk. I don’t go with a plan other than to lay a blanket on the grass and… nothing beyond that. There is something so freeing about going somewhere to do, essentially, nothing. But be.
I’ve brought my mom and my best friend here on different occasions too. They have fun but aren’t as eager to just sit for hours as I am so I often go alone.

Here are some pictures I took at the park today:

This is actually heaven to me

Sitting on the grass, surrounded by beautiful flowers and shade trees, watching birds and butterflies…

Happy birthday to me 🌸
